Q. When I need focus ...

Use this entry to help others help you find the space, time and place to create focus when you need it.

COVID has undoubtedly had a major impact on how and where we work, with both positive and negative changes to the working day. One of the biggest challenges for those working remotely or working from home, has been finding focus - especially when every day can seem like a long list of calendar invites and back to back bookings for conversations. Where do we find the time to actually focus?

Whilst there are many different techniques, tools and ways to get ourselves into a state of focus or deep work, that's only part of the problem - interruptions and notifications from others can get in the way all too easily.

So communicating to others how, when, and where you are getting into a focused working state helps others understand that space and moment should be respected.

This entry in the Manual of Me helps you outline when you're choosing to be in focus, what signals or signs you show that you're not to be interrupted, and what others can do to help you find that all important time to keep your head in the work.

How to find your answer ...

1/ Consider what time of the day or which days of the week you want to have as protected time for focus. It can help to have habitual times, so that others know not to book meetings over the time.

2/ Consider what ways you'll communicate that you're not available for meetings - how will others know you're not to be interrupted? Does it take a pretend invite/meeting in your diary, or is the 'DND' mode on Slack enough to notify others?

3/ Are there things other can help you do, to achieve that state of focus? Does it require some accountability, a deadline, or offloading some work to someone else? Consider including that in your manual.

4/ Ask others to answer this too - you might discover some useful techniques, but respecting the time of others is just as important.
