Hello, I'm
Rich Cooley
When I'm dealing with stress, I ...

Will try not to be cranky, but I may need a moment to feel those feelings. I'm usually aware of it but sometimes I'm not, so please let me know if you think I'm feeling stressed.

If I'm stressed then I might temporarily change my working patterns or need a bit of a break between meetings. This is nothing personal but having a few minutes away from my screen can be a useful thing to keep me productive.

Perhaps I will opt to pick up some work that I can do individually, this does not mean that I have stopped caring about deadlines. Rather I'm taking advantage of the due date so that I can do work that I may find easier to pick up at a given time. However, if you feel like I should be working on something else then please let me know so that I can change what I'm working on or pick that work up next.

I'm happy for people to help me in these situations, perhaps we could pair on the work or talk about the thing that I'm finding stressful.

The best way to give me feedback is …

As soon as possible please. I like to improve in my profession and I like to work well with people, I'm conscious that people may prefer to work in a different way to me and that is fine.

Please let me know:
1) What I should do more of.
2) What I should do less of.
3) What I'm doing just the right amount of.

You can give me feedback, face-to-face, via Slack or email. If you are feeling self conscious then please pass the feedback on to Kellie Green and she can pass it on in an anonymised way.

The basics you should know about me are ...

People call me Rich, I'm an interaction designer on a 6 month contract. I try to solve problems in the simplest way possible so that users can achieve their goals and we can deliver work quickly. I'm picking up the great work Jo did. I'm looking forward to picking up some work with you all.

I would rather do something good now so I'll try to pick up things that I think I can help with and push them forwards. However, let me know if you think I should be working on something else of if you feel like I'm treading on your toes.

Beyond work, I’m really passionate about ...

Things I like:
- Lego
- video games
- table top games
- film, tv, anime
- books
- hanging out with the family

My absolute requirements to do great work are ...

An understanding of the problem or outcome we want. I do not think any one individual should define what the problems, outcomes or solutions are. We may not agree on everything but we should be able to quickly come to a shared understanding.

An understanding of how much you care about a thing, I like to use this simple scale (https://capwatkins.com/blog/the-sliding-scale-of-giving-a-fuck). To work at speed sometimes we only need to know how important a thing is to an individual, not why.

I like a mixture of group and individual work so that I do not get too tired from being on calls all day.

I prefer Slack huddles so that we do not loose the chat when the meeting ends. It can also be very useful to draw on each-others screens. When I work, I will try to pull in people that I think would be useful but I'm happy for anyone to come along. We are all custodians of good design.

I need people to share opinions, its ok for us to disagree but sharing an opinion can help me and others form our own opinions.

When a problem is too big or complex then I like to descope and simplify. This allows me to tackle the core/part of a problem then move onto the next most important thing.

I think its important to do the most simple thing and release it, this lets us do more in the same amount of time. I like to focus on a chunk of work, then when its released, clear a bunch of that stuff from my head to make room for the next thing.

I'm happy to chat on Slack but I find it quicker and easier to understand a thing by seeing it and talking about it. Consequently I like to keep calls short and focused. If we cover everything then I like to end the call and give people time back. We can always book in another call to discuss something else.

My best working patterns look like ...

I usually work 8:00 to 16:30 Monday to Friday. I try to keep the 8:00 to 8:30 free so that I can think about the days work, what I want to achieve and constraints I should be aware of. I also try to keep 16:00 to 16:30 free for an afternoon catchup, this is time for anyone to reach out about anything.

I find it easier to make big or complex decisions earlier on in the day, so if you ask something complicated then I may want to take the evening to think about it.

Like most people I'm working remote, but I do enjoy pairing on work especially when picking up work (understanding the work, scope and ideating) and polishing it (iterations to a well thought out thing to improve it). Because of this I like to have a short group call, ideate asynchronously or in small groups and review it together. This gives us a shared understanding of what we think it good and allows me to go and develop the solution in a small group/individually.
