Hello, I'm
Martin Ayres
I add value to teams by …

Sharing knowledge and creative ideas to spark innovation and out-of-the-box thinking.
Building rapport and bringing out the best in those around me - leading by example when appropriate.
Remaining dedicated and solution-focused even in difficult, high stress situations.
Offering a considered perspective or solution that's pragmatic, valuable and achievable.
Playing either the cheerleader or the devil's advocate - whichever the situation requires.

People often say I’m brilliant at …

Relentless tenacity and a can-do attitude - almost nothing is impossible.
Breaking down problems and developing effective solutions that fix them.
Communicating ideas clearly so that ambiguity doesn't cloud decisions.
Connecting authentically with positivity (and humour).

My best working patterns look like ...

In a word: Flexible.

I don't really have any set ways of working and am always up for trying something new to see if it works. I'm completely malleable when it comes to working patterns and am naturally more of a night owl than an early bird.

I'm not precious about contact on days off either; so, if you need me, call me. I'd honestly rather take a 30 second phone call whilst walking the dog on than come in to find that something has stalled or been paused unnecessarily.

The basics you should know about me are ...

I'm Martin, and before working here, I was a freelance consultant who specialised in communications strategy, creative problem-solving and developing solutions to problems faced by businesses large and small. In a nutshell, I worked with teams to help them figure out what to do next.

I've developed and delivered impactful, international award-winning work for organisations including Burger King, Superdrug, Tesco, Cartoon Network, Fox's Biscuits, Warner Bros., Very.co.uk, GEAR4, Tomy, Disney and General Motors, as well as many lovely smaller businesses.

I combine strategic foresight with creative, innovative ideas and a hacker ethic - and love prototyping and testing ideas out as much as seeing the big picture and finding a path through the woods on paper.

I'm a single parent to a little rescued bitch called Betty who takes up far more of my 'spare' time (and money) than she should, but she keeps me out of trouble - most of the time. I get easily distracted, am teaching myself to code and doing a distance learning course in Counselling.

I've experienced a lot so far in life and it's really difficult to offend me. I've got a skin as thick as a phone book so if there's something you'd like to know, just ask!

By joining this team, I’m really looking forward to ...

Applying my skills and lived experiences to empower others and create positive change.
Collaborating with passionate, dedicated colleagues towards shared goals.
Developing my strengths whilst expanding my capabilities.
Making a meaningful contribution and being valued for my abilities.

The teams in which I thrive in have ...

A clear, inspiring vision and purpose I’m passionate about.
Healthy, open communication and psychological safety.
Appreciation for diversity of thought, background and working styles.
A nurturing environment where growth and wellbeing are prioritized.
Autonomy, agency and the ability to decide how to deliver results.

A sense of humour.

The sort of projects which really excite me have …

A social justice or community impact element where I can make a difference. They'll have intellectually stimulating components that allow me to continuously expand my knowledge as well as opportunities to utilize my creativity and problem-solving skills.
My attention span is short. Very short. So variety, complexity, and new challenges keep me engaged.

The channels I prefer to communicate via are ...

Thoughtful asynchronous written communication when precision is needed.
Productive dialogue where there is openness to explore concepts in-depth.
Quick messages to align on logistics or changes.
Visuals, audio and experiential activities to stimulate new thinking.
Telepathically, if you want everything to misalign.

My absolute requirements to do great work are ...

Candour. Macbook Pro. iPhone. Fountain pen and notebook.
Decent, informative and clearly defined brief/scope of work including agreed KPI's/Measurement metrics.
Enough time to fulfil the brief.
Freedom to work collaboratively and creatively.
Opportunity to grow and learn.
Sense of humour.

The things which prevent me from doing my best are …

Feeling disconnected from the mission or team members.
Being micromanaged or not given autonomy to direct my work.
Insufficient context or communication around goals and expectations.
Environments with negativity, excessive bureaucracy or office politics.
Rules for the sake of rules.

The best way you can check-in on me is ...

With fearless candour, empathy, openness, and a collaborative spirit.
By providing constructive feedback focused on growth and positive, relevant examples of what you're looking for instead.
Through regular, open dialogue to align on priorities and anticipating challenges.
With patience and understanding if I am experiencing a brief period of mental ill health.

The best way to give me feedback is …

honestly, candidly and written, (if possible) please.

I need to hear how and where I could improve things as well as where I've done well. I need to understand the areas which are good enough, so I don't over-engineer the answer, and pre-planned check-ins with me are a great way to make sure I'm not wandering off the path.

I don't accept compliments well, so try to and position them as a good outcome for the project, rather than my work being good.

Beyond work, I’m really passionate about ...

The future.

But also...
democracy and civic resilience
holding to account
law and natural justice
learning new skills
helping others
psychology of people
creativity and ideas
internet and virtual reality
space and technology
